Serious historical and scholarly books, even if also appealing to a broad audience, are usually veted by experts in the relevant field. If the vetters have serious problems the book is usually not published. University Presses, like Yale, Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Univ. Chicago, many others, etc., have excellent records. Mass market publishers...who knows, except Cheerskep? I've vetted art/theory books for the Univ presses. I didn't like 2 of them and they weren't published. Maybe I was too harsh (or wrong?) because there's always something of value in art books. WC
