Sentimentality is a word with as much fuzziness as Aesthetrics.
All art has it, is someone's individual mind. So i feel.

The first imaginative works that come to my mind are lamentations
over the
dead Christ -- a theme I really like! -- with so many fine examples
in both
painting (Giotto) and sculpture.(Donatello) But also -- many bad
examples as
well (Bouguereau). Happily -- the above distinction between those
three
artists is shared by mainstream art history (or -- at least used to
be) -- but
how might one explain it? All three of them can easily be considered
consummate craftsmen -- and wouldn't they all demonstrate what
William might
call an intense concern for visuality ? And -- of course -- the
mythical story
is identical for all three.
And wouldn't you say that all three versions are "steeped in
sentimentality" ?
(which is why -- that is not how I would identify the problems I've
had with
Andrew Wyeth)
And yet -- the bad ones fill me with despair, and the good ones
with joy and
hope.
How can this be explained ?
