News just moving on the wires: John Updike has died at 76.

I remember reading The Centaur in college, being taken by the story of the relatively humble or unassuming high-school teacher in Pennsylvania and the odd fantasy story within it about Chiron the Centaur and Venus. Then came Rabbit Run, and shortly thereafter, Couples. That was my early encounter with his work. I loved his almost overly-rich prose that infused something sensuous in what in many ways were mundane stories.
