I don't know about your attention span for paintings and sculptures, Mando, but mine maxes out at 10 minutes -- and usually much less.
On the other hand, a playwright/director has to hold an audience tight for 90 minutes or more, an incredible achievement -- and hardly ever successful with impatient individuals like myself, so I walk out of (or go to sleep in) shows all the time. I think that's why a phenomenally successful director like Robbins was so fanatic about getting each moment better-better-better-best. It wasn't about expressing his artistic soul -- it was about keeping the attention of a demanding audience.
