Or, we might consider function (however it might be conceived) to be just one
of many limitations imposed on a project.  (along with the limitations of
time, materials, ability etc)

The job of the designer is to make something  appear to have been
limited/balanced/compromised by absolutely nothing.

Is that attitude unreasonably extreme ?

I would say that without that extremism, all we'll get is mediocrity.
