I agree that it's good to give things to museums but mostly people don't have
what big museums want, or can't supply a good provenance for what they have.
Try to give things to the right places, where they will contribute to some
collection. Univ. museums, small historical museums, libraries, are some good
choices for items that may not be sought by the big museums. Almost always,
you'll need to get your own appraisals if you want some tax benefit.

What's the oldest object in my possession?

Our house, I suppose - built in 1890.

But so what?

If I had something which public museums might display, I'd feel bad about
keeping it for myself and would give it to them.

I.e. -- I'm a member of the public, and public museums should be as much
mine as anybody else's. (even if I realize that money talks and taste walks)

And I won't live in a city without a big art museum that I can visit every
week.
