"Because if females were only attracted to dead males, no species would
last
another generation."

I thing the comparison is wrong theoretically and practically.
The mechanisms of the Evolution of society as a culture and 'physiology', on
present level, is much more then just mechanical procreation. The functions of
dead artist's art and dead human body is
a mistake to compere, unless as a joke.
Dutton is more then an entertainer, otherwise such serious art lover like
Chris would not waste so much valuable time on reading and writing on Dutton.

Here's the actual quote about the art of dead people:

"if art is a vestigial fitness marker for courtship or a way of knowing
another mind in social interchange, it follows that the love of art made by
dead people is an evolutionary mistake"

Because if females were only attracted to dead males, no species would last
another generation.

But if females were also attracted to those who spoke authoritatively about
attractive dead males, then, happily, homo sapiens could continue, sired by
professors in the Humanities.

Which is to say - this passage should be taken as a lighthearted aside.

Though, I don't think the book can be taken seriously at all - either as
evolutionary psychology or philosophy of art.

Dutton is an entertainer.
