Byron, I bet you found it. I remember some time back having this problem; I 
went to Word Preferences and switched off that automatic conversion -- and 
the problem stopped.

Meantime I bought a new computer (Macbook Pro), and it never occurred to me 
that of course it comes with the automatic conversion by default. 

"This sentence is being typed in "Word" after turning off the automatic 
conversion of straight quotes to "smart quotes". I'll now copy and paste this 
into the aol window, send. I'm betting the BBs are gone."
