William raises a subject of free will, which is resolved in philosophy, in my
view, to the same degree as a subject of art- quite
muddied.
For me dialectic determinism is not in a conflict with a number of
alternatives in social practices.
Variety comes from the uniqueness of each individual. This is only what
determines the freedom of choice.

If what Boris says is true then our social practices, etc., would be
determinist, ultimately leaving no room for alternative choices that are equal
in presumed benefits. But alternatives are what typifies social practices.
There are so many ways to act even though we are coerced or encouraged to act
in certain ways in different times and contexts.

the Althusserian belief that "our desires, choices,
intentions, preferences, judgments and so forth are the consequences of
social practices"

Our desires, choices,
intentions, preferences, judgments and so forth are the consequences of
physiological demands forming social practices.
