All of the above objects which Michael is examining have specific, objective purposes, the fulfillment of which can be analyzed - which is why Michael's pointless discussion of them is so ludicrous. But paintings are different. Many possible purposes can be reasonably considered, many different stories can be told, and indeed, Berger lists about 10 different kinds in Chapter 4.
