Does that work for food--and gustatory delight is a literal matter of taste?
Should it matter to an eater whether there is a consensus that mushrooms taste
good in order for the eater to appreciate the taste of mushrooms?

Or isn't your inquiry the very definition of mass marketing of appearances?
