My stab - Generally urban planners created cities on razed and leveled ground which destroyed the natural setting. The Picturesque movement would seem to play upon need or desire for integration into nature, rather than a separation from it, by creating spaces that appear as though the structures had been erected in harmony with the natural landscape. Like a movie set, it allows us for a moment to feel an interconnectedness with our own history as natural (romantic?) movement.
