I wasn't thinking about that so much as what bits and pieces of visual stuff had sneaked into contemporary representational landscape painting which were actually picturesque in themselves or substituting for something more substantial. Cracks in asphalt, for example, or stains on concrete, or sneakers on wires. I know about the Townscape movement,that isn't the problem. Kate Sullivan

The Picturesque movement would seem to play upon need or desire for integration into nature, rather than a separation from it, by creating spaces that appear as though the structures had been erected in harmony with the natural landscape. Like a movie set, it allows us for a moment to feel an interconnectedness with our own history as natural (romantic?) movement.
