That's a way to handle it with a customer.  If this is for your own infrastructure, then I'd suggest a right of way for your microwave path.  You should specify that you have the right to access the ROW to clear trees, and that he can't build a structure taller than "x" feet within the ROW.

...or just keep it informal as long as he's friendly.  The danger with anything informal is he could decide in the future that he doesn't like you anymore, or the land could get sold to someone who /isn't/ friendly.
