true also bad optics will get different power readings so this in any scale would be a must. The other issue with these would be the copper port would have to be 1g full duplex or it wont come up. so if someone who insists on keeping their rb45g plgs in to it with 100m it won't work.

to me something that you can get remote statistics and test to is pretty much a must.

True, most of the benefit is statistics on the copper interfaces.  I have had a drop fiber get kinked and make for asymmetric power readings though.

If it's BiDi, the Rx signal on one end shouldn't be too different

I would miss having error counters on the copper interface that
the customer plugs in to.  If that interface was faulty and you
couldn't see it then you'd sit there looking at your switch
interface running error free and tell the customer (incorrectly)
    that everything is fine.

Part of my bias is from having spent a lot of time on tech support
in the past.  I hate an invisible problem.  If I told someone
there's no problem and it turned out there was actually something
wrong then I felt like an ass.  I'm thinking 95-99% of the time
you'd get by with your media converter, and 1% of the time you'd
be an ass.  Maybe that's ok given the other savings you'd have.

I like error counters and Rx signal strength at the customer
side, those have helped more than once with troubleshooting issues.

I use the RB260GS units, seem to work fine and they provide
troubleshooting capabilities at the customer end. Dumb media
converters would be a non-starter for me.

It has storage specs to –20C. Not sure why operating
temps are 0C on the lower end.  But if it is inside an
            enclosure it will self heat.
            $23 plus the $9 SFP.

$32 plus enclosure.  Pretty low cost per customer doing
            it this way.
I know Sterling uses MTs for much the same thing, but if
I remember he cannot get the one he likes any longer.
I like this as there is zero config here.  Dumb media
converter.  Put all your smarts at your router or switch.
