I think Eero (didn’t Amazon buy them?) is even more annoying, not only does it require config via a phone app, you communicate with the router via “the cloud”. Which means you can’t configure your new router unless it can connect to the Internet out of the box with default settings.
I’m imagining a future where you can’t even drive your car or get food out of your fridge if your Internet is down, and nothing works with software you already have like a web browser, you need an app for everything. Annoyingly, most of the several hundred dollar multi-unit "whole home WiFi systems", which everybody seems to think they need now, seem to do that. Last time I checked into it, the answer that I got was that there is no way to manually set the channel. I think they use two 80mhz channels (one for devices to connect to, and another for the remote things to connect to the base... but I'm not sure about that). I hate those things. Have to use the App, if you HTTP To it from a PC, it just tells you to download the App on your smartphone. I've been telling people to stay away from them. Not to mention that the google speedtest is horribly broken, and happily emails users that they are getting very slow speeds.
