Subject: Re: [AFMUG] Good UPS with a Physical switch

Are you sure it’s the switch that’s the problem?

I have some old sites (up to 15 years) with APC Smart-UPS XL series (mostly
SU1400RMXL) and one with a Tripp-Lite SU750XL and have not seen this. The
closest I have seen is APC units that won’t start back up on commercial power
after the battery is run down all the way, in fact I think I had one with a
totally dead battery that wouldn’t even start up if you pushed the ON button,
but was OK once the battery was replaced. Are you monitoring power at these
sites, is it possible the problem is occurring after an extended power outage?

Mostly we do DC sites, but where we want to run everything off AC, we are using
Alpha FXM series (rack mount) or Micro series (self contained outdoor
enclosure). Probably more than you want to spend, but not all that expensive
for what you get. They do have a physical AC input on/off rocker switch /
circuit breaker.

If the Alpha stuff is overkill and you can use more of an indoor home/office
style UPS, that Tripp Lite model is still sold and has not given me any
trouble, other than the optional SNMP/web card is a little weird and the fan
runs all the time. It has the digital buttons you don’t like though, one for
ON/TEST, another for OFF.

Subject: [AFMUG] Good UPS with a Physical switch

The vast majority of our towers run on 48v power, but we have a couple small
towers that just have 110vac with a standard UPS. The UPSs we have bought
recently have this “momentary” type switch (digital blab la bla) and sometimes
they will just turn off. Maybe there is a slight surge or something, but they
in essence turn themselves OFF.

Looking for a UPS with the old fashion physical ON / OFF rocker type switch,
that I know will stay on.

Was surprised looking around that they are hard to find.

Any suggestions?
