My mom did our geneaology for years. She has a whole bookshelf full of family data. We has a suicide that shot himself a few times, a nazi captain who hung himself after the war, many suprising divorces, some double marriages, interesting stuff you dig up. My grampa came through ellis island, they treated him like dirt and respelled his last name from eckel to eckle. A lot of the ellis island histories are negative. She went back pretty far on the german side. Dads side is mutts so there wasnt as much clear lineage. Charles richter is shirt tail, but none of that family would talk to her, not sure why, maybe they were afraid she was after the scale.
