This goes for switches too. I wired up a bunch of solar panels once with a regular light switch to shut off each string. Those AC rated light switches all shorted out about the second time I used them.

So there is never a low current condition unless the load is wildly variable (which is not typical). In an AC circuit, you have a zero crossing 120 times per second.
