This goes for switches too.  I wired up a bunch of solar panels once with a 
regular light switch to shut off each string.  Those AC rated light switches 
all shorted out about the second time I used them.

  DC is a much bigger deal because the voltage is constant. So there is never a 
low current condition unless the load is wildly variable (which is not typical).


  In an AC circuit, you have a zero crossing 120 times per second. So there is 
a low current (zero actually) condition every time it crosses zero. Eliminates 
the arcing issue.
