Calix doesn't really fit our business model. We have them through acquisitions only and phase them out where possible.

Friendly's cost has many different components. We are under NDA but a one-time cost, including professional services and set up licensed for 40k devices was about what others charge per device per month, or a cup of coffee.

Server is nothing special.
Processor: 8 Cores
Memory: 64 GB RAM minimum
Storage: Local 1000 GB or more in RAID1 SSD Drives with latency < 1ms
Network: Interface Gigabit Ethernet NICs
Operating: System Windows Server 2016 (64-bit) or higher

Yes, unfortunately the portal component is still Windows for now but you can separate out the other functions (database and engine) onto Linux. We decided to keep in all on one platform for now.

Add in yearly maintenance and it's still significantly more cost effective than all others we evaluated, or every vendors' own proprietary solution.

Another alternative is to roll your own. GenieACS is what I originally used, and still do for a small deployment (change default passwords and set the SSID/passphrase for a small standalone managed WiFi service on ~20 ONTs). The person that wrote it is/was for hire as well. For simple provisioning, it's probably all you would ever need.

Oh, I forgot to mention TR-069 is a pig (can be lots of traffic/packets if you use the entire paramter tree and at frequent intervals) but TR-369 is gaining momentum. Friendly supports it (I belive GenieACS does as well) but CPE vendors need to get on the ball.

Hope that helps.

Calix cloud actually auto-manages wifi freqs and such. Did you ever try that? Reason is that they are not supporting some of our combo gateways so if they don't, as well as not supporting Mikrotik either it may be time to jump ship and find something more affordable and with the ability to handle a wider variety of products. Their cloud does work pretty good though, but no on PREM. I like you prefer all things to be on prem. Any estimate on what you paid for the server? You can hit me off list. Just curious to see how much per 1k customers etc.Â

Pricing was pretty flexible.  I think cloud is
recurring per device and on-prem is one-time
(based on a block of devices) and then a yearly
maintenance fee.  Far less than other products.

They also have some additional modules, like QoE
that we are looking at to keep WiFi statistics
over time.  We also haven't started using WiFi
optimization yet but the goal is to scan in home
WiFi networks and make adjustments, similar to
Plume.  The other thing we expect to start using
is automating the required FCC speedtests.
