My current employer uses VMWare…..and fortunately someone else deals with the
licensing crap.

I would still use Proxmox if I was the one writing the checks. Even if I
wasn’t writing the checks, if I was still trying to be a one-man band I’d pick
Proxmox just for the simplicity of it. Untangling licensing stuff is not
something I want to spend time on.

Steven,

I had this issue years and years ago with Vmware. I really hate these companies
that make licenses over complicated. The essentials if fine for now. I don't
think I'll need more than 3 servers. The extra server I was adding, is just a
small network appliance running a mikrotik CHR and a speedtest server. Not a
mission critical system, so no big deal if it is not linked into vCenter. Found
a stand alone license for it.

Always funny seeing others dealing with Vmware with buyers remorse. I was in
your spot. I HATE Vmware on their business and licensing side. It is why I
dumped them. They made things so complicated and absurd they screwed
themselves out of the continuation of our support and service contract.
Nothing but headaches, overpayment and lack of flexibility. They screw the
little guys full bore.

I went through this - You need to swap to Vmware "standard" (at minimum)
licenses and ante up much more to separate into vcenter and individual licenses
and add them as you add servers. Per processor etc price will go up.

I bought vSphere 7 essentials a few months ago. Have it all setup. Have 3
host licensed.

I just spun up a 4th host. I can not figure out how to get a license for a
single host to add to vCenter. All I keep finding is the bundles.
