Looks like long-haul 100G is on the menu, boys! To date transporting 100G over longer distances has required separate and expensive optical transport systems or platforms with CFP interfaces.
That's about to change as regular QSFP28 form factor optics for long-haul 100G are coming to market. The new optics will use coherent lasers and DSPs to enable transmission distances of 120 km without amplification and 300 km with amps. Previously this wasn't possible since vendors could not fit all that inside the QSFP28 5 watt power envelope. That's the real breakthrough, all the nice things like tunable optics and flexible DWDM grids are just icing on the cake. This is the first vendor to announce: https://www.adva.com/en/products/open-optical-transport/pluggables-and-subsystems/coherent-100zr ... more are likely to follow. - Jared -- AF mailing list AF@af.afmug.com http://af.afmug.com/mailman/listinfo/af_af.afmug.com
