Looks like long-haul 100G is on the menu, boys!

To date transporting 100G over longer distances has required separate and 
expensive optical transport systems or platforms with CFP interfaces.

That's about to change as regular QSFP28 form factor optics for long-haul 100G 
are coming to market.

The new optics will use coherent lasers and DSPs to enable transmission 
distances of 120 km without amplification and 300 km with amps. Previously this 
wasn't possible since vendors could not fit all that inside the QSFP28 5 watt 
power envelope. That's the real breakthrough, all the nice things like tunable 
optics and flexible DWDM grids are just icing on the cake.
