If you have a empty spool take the sides off and use long screws (or bolts if 
you prefer) to attach them to whatever remains of the existing sides and then 
re-spool it.

I have also seen people make crosses out of 2x12’s to do essentially the same 
thing with a hole for the spindle.   Or 2x6’s spaced to make a hole for the 
spindle.
