But if you're looking for a job, AI will evaluate your resume, which you
wrote with AI.

One of the things that strikes me is how impersonal these big corporate
layoffs are now, done via mass emails or text messages.

I was a manager for several years at a division of Rockwell International.
(Run by bean counters, any quarter below target could result in layoffs)
Being a manager was an actual job, it involved some unpleasant tasks like
layoffs, and some skills you had to learn for doing those tasks. First
level managers would call each of their direct reports into their office and
either tell them they were safe or they were being let go. Things like
severance pay, COBRA, etc were explained by the manager or HR. Badges were
collected. Some people would cry or get mad, but I never let someone go
with a text or email or social media post, you did it in person.

Maybe it's because so many people work remotely now? Or maybe line managers
have 100 direct reports now? I get the impression management isn't really a
job any more, that managers don't actually do anything.

For one thing, there's been a perspective shift. It used to be we went to
work unless we couldn't get out of bed. For lots of reasons. You'd get
fired, people would think you're a baby, and your conscience couldn't
tolerate that the day would be harder for your coworkers who rely on you.
At some point I started hearing, "Don't go to work sick or you'll make
everyone else sick." I think they underestimate rhinovirus if they believe
that.

We've also been building a shortage of workers across the board as the baby
boomer population bump retires. You have to take the bad with the good
because there's nobody to replace them, and you can't demand too much or
they'll disappear. I know unemployment varies regionally, but I think
anyone who hasn't been able to find a job in the past 10 years is doing
something wrong.

Another cultural shift is a different relationship with the workplace. My
identity is wrapped up in my job, and I freely admit that. People now think
that's unhealthy. I think if your identity is wrapped up in Pokemon or
Instagram that you're an idiot. We'll see who's unhealthy when the next
recession hits.

In my experience owners are much healthier than employees. Is it just me?
