This might have already been addressed since I was away from the list over the weekend.
I probably worded my statement poorly. Someone made a comment about the prices fluctuating a lot and that this was probably how most of the money was going to be made on this stock. My comments should have said “Does anyone every make money in short term or day trading in the stock market without someone else losing the same amount”. I agree completely with you about long term ownership and a company building value. I guess short term or day trading doesn’t necessarily always result in someone losing money though either. It’s really just when you buy a stock that the price has crashed, then sell it when they go back up. Whoever sold it to you at the bottom price probably lost money. So basically, it’s only when someone dumps a stock for less than they paid for it that someone had to lose money. Maybe I’m mistaken but it seems like that happens quite a bit. If you invest in my company, I build it up and sell it for more money then wealth was indeed created. You got your original investment back plus a share of the profits. The new owner is happy because they willingly bought the company. Your customers are happy, etc. Abstract that one level to stock and the stock market. Who lost money in the above scenario? One could argue the customers did but they got fair value for their service, right? If I invest in your company via a direct paid-in-capital or by buying debentures or by buying stock it is still an investment. Hopefully the company will be worth more when I sell my ownership interest. When I sell for more than I paid, who lost? The new owner of the stock got fair value. ________________________________ From: "James Howard via Af" <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> To: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> Sent: Friday, September 19, 2014 1:56:12 PM Subject: Re: [AFMUG] today's a big day on the stock market..... --- [ James Howard <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> wrote ]: ----------------------------------- Does anyone ever make money in the stock market without someone else losing that same amount of money?
