60 mph is slow now days. Traxxas XO-1 does over 100 straight out of the box.

My son has one. Wicked fast. Search YouTube all kinds of videos.

Such as this sales infomercial… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oX1Ij92s_Sk

These high end hobby cars can go like 60mph. I think they ALL can break if you
crash them at 60mph.

I picked up a Team Losi rtr nitro truck, which was friggin awesome, but was a
bit tricky to get started sometimes - I'm not great with the carb settings.

For cheap/easy fun, these are great:

You can load them up with all the standard motors, servos, electronics, etc,
and they're dead simple to work on.

That one looks cool. I also found this which looks like it meets most of what
people were talking about.

$200 Brushless motor, waterproof, RTR. Says that it's similar speed to a
nitro (which I read as I crash it a lot more while I'm learning to run it).

I Used to have a nitro rc car. Was lots of fun because i liked fixing it. If
you only budget 200 bux u will be disapointed. When i got out of it
everything was going electric because is was faster and less "fiddling". I
haven't read any reviews but the 1/16 erevo seems to meet your requirements.

would take you a little over budget. You also didn't say weither you wanted a
kit or a rtr. I
would opt for the brushless version of it. But u might want to get an
aftermarket after a bit anyway. BTW used to have a 1/10 nitro revo and it was
awesome. Some of the older traxxas cars where junk though.

Good luck,

I would go to the local hobby store, typically those guys know a lot about
this stuff, at least that is how it used to be 20 years ago. When I was into
this stuff, the ultimate was having a gas powered RC truck/car, but I never had
one :(

For a long time I've wanted an RC car. I was at the beach over the weekend,
and saw a guy running one through the sand and jumping it around and it looked
really fun. I think I'm finally in a position in life where I can allow myself
to get one. I'm thinking I may want one step above one you can buy at a big-
box, but I also don't plan on making it into a hobby. Any pointers for a guy
who just wants to run a car around sometimes?

Some things I think I want, unless I'm told I'm wrong.

4wd

Ability to cross sand/mud/shallow water (does this mean waterproof?)

Won't break if it flips/crashes.

100 yard range.

Rechargeable battery

Anything specific to look for? Anything to stay away from? I'm hoping to keep
this little endeavor around $200, that way I don't have to go through all the
requisition forms and justification analysis with the wife.
