I think part of the reason for that though is wanting to get TV and movies on 
to the same standards. while TV always used horizontal lines before, digital 
cinema has used vertical lines since the beginning... the first digital 
theatres were 2k, which was 2048x1080 (opposed to 1080i/p TV being 
1920x1080...) and the 4k (and 8k) standard was already being used in high end 
projectors and cameras long before any 4k TVs were being sold... so at least 
there is that.

As far as there being content shot in 4k... isn't pretty much every movie these 
days? besides, pretty much anything shot on decent film should be beyond 1080p 
anyway...

Yeah, LG wants to get in front with this…

However for the record, what is being called 4k is really 2k or UHD. The 
marketing departments decided that they no longer wanted to follow tradition of 
counting horizontal lines. There are way more vertical lines, let’s count those!
