if the connector wasn't made to be user-accessible, it stands to reason that it would not be enabled in the firmware.. you wouldn't want to transmit on that side if there's no antenna.

Generally speaking people will get a u.fl to N female bulkhead. Then box it up as "the radio". On the tower you have the antenna,
    N male jumper and "the radio".
