The first time I had to use vi I was sent to Tennessee for an
"emergency" programming project. Before I got on the airplane, I
snabbed (borrowed) a copy of the Nutshell book on vi. I then read the
book on the flight to Nashville. It was kind of a trial by fire, because
the platform I had to use to do the project only had a text interface,
and the only editor was vi.
I spent a couple of weeks on the project, and when it was done, I pretty
much knew (and had learned to appreciate) the idiosyncrasies of vi. In
retrospect, it wasn't such a big deal, and yes, my "muscle memory" makes
it the tool I tend to pull out.

I teach new people to Linux to use nano because it works like you’d think an
editor should, sort of like notepad for Linux. OTOH, vi is muscle memory now,
and you can’t break a system enough that it won’t still have vi left intact.
The first time was infuriating though. Use what works for you, everyone has
their toolbox of tricks, work out your own and use it.
