Not as pervasive, but we have smart meters here... then again, I'm 100% 5 GHz. 
Smart meters and LTE are different beasts. Smart meters use tiny channels that 
are immune to interference. LTE is normal sized channels, but more fragile. 
Smart meters can have antennas with some gain on them. Most phones have 
negative gain, so range from tower makes them almost useless in the macro 
network. 900 goes forever... 5 GHz dies at a tree.

Exactly, I think it's highly unlikely they'll be doing this on the majority of 
their networks. And if it is... we figure out a way to deal with it, just like 
we always do - that's the way it goes using unlicensed spectrum.
