In the BC gulf islands and US San Juan islands (NW corner of WA state) there's numerous private islands and estates that when they go on the market sell for $8 million or more... You probably would (or wouldn't?) be surprised to see the efforts some wealthy technology executives have put into getting proper broadband to their homes. These are people who bought Microsoft stock in 1998 and held it until 2005, or similar.
Just about the only thing that hasn't been done yet is a private submarine fiber cable.
