A couple of nanostations on a 5MHz channel would do the trick.

Not sure how realtime SMS might be. Cellular data modem modules are
way overkill.
Was thinking of just putting a cheap cell phone at one end and using
bell 202 format over it. I would have to write some kind of decoding
app.
But then you have your phone tied up all the time you are using the
system.
Still like the SMS idea but need the data within a second or two of
transmission, not minutes (or hours in the case of my AT&T phone when
it is powered off. Sometimes takes up to 12 hours to receive SMS).
