If Josh Reynolds is looking back into the 19th century (which I believe is the case since we started with talking of Lincoln), then IMO he's correct. The civil war and reconstruction era democrats were openly racist, pro small government, against income tax, and so on.

The Republicans were the civil rights and central authority people. The "flip" must have been very gradual over the years though.
