What I really, really dislike is the "loop in a box" for lack of a better term. Guaranteed to kink, and don't you dare to ever stuff any back in the box. The Shireen reels in a box are pure crap. They lock up, snag, or just bind into a non-rotating condition at the drop of a hat. The only thing that seems to consistently work is the actual reels.

Give me a real reel any day.

What do you consider “normal” Cat5? Indoor? Plenum? Multiple colors? I assume you want Cat5e. Are you just looking for an unshielded, non gel filled cable, but doesn’t have to specifically be indoor or plenum cable? (I believe technically you aren’t supposed to run outdoor cable for more than 50 feet indoors due to flame rating.) Also, would you accept a “reel in a box” as long as the box doesn’t fall apart? It seems to offer the best of both worlds.

I wish I could find normal cat5 on a spool. It takes less room in the service vehicles and spools out smooth without kinks. But I can only find it in the direct bury flavor. I made my guys some nice reel holders so they can put the spool on its side and slide it under the shelves in their vans for payout. But that is for the 7 conductor power cable we use to connect the ONTs. Be nice to be able to do the same thing for CAT 5.

If a cable is more durable, then it's longer before you have to go back and replace it. If a cable is less kinky and stiff, then it installs easier which saves labor. We have to try to quantify and weigh these factors. It's not religion, it's business. There's also no harm in appreciating the good aspects of a design even if it's something as mundane as cable.

I could understand if we were all using CCA with non-uv rated cable with no shield and installing the shit underwater, but given some of the price differences for minimal gain, most of the cabling issues in my experience have been related to inadequacies in installer training and not the cable itself - or using staples... those people are the fucking devil. And expensive. The foil tears easily. I like everything
about the Shireen 1042 for tower cable. Larger tinned
stranded drain wire would be nice, but meh. The foil is
more than heavy enough and isn't brittle like the
            Belden/Best-Tronics stuff.

Have you tried the Shireen DC-1042? It’s similar to
Belden, but the foil isn’t bonded to the jacket so you
can actually fold it back. It has the dry gel
impregnated tape instead of the clear mylar in the
Belden. Only thing I miss maybe is the stranded drain
wire. I forget which Belden version has that, we used
to buy both 1300a and 7919a, I think maybe it was the
7919a that had the stranded drain wire.
The Shireen pullboxes work pretty nice.

thats how the belden is, soft sheath is more durable. I
love coming across it. the apex is prone to pinholing
            and kinking
