we still use those on occasion. they even make a combo now with homeplug and an access point built in that can be used as a repeater.

I get a similar result going the other way....with the one homeplug unit in the apartment, I can get a weak signal on an outlet down the hall from the utility closet. It seems like if I'm that close, then maybe just a better piece of equipment would make it happen. This is a temporary and freebie thing, so before you tell me how much homeplug sucks, just be aware that I only need it to work for a little while. I could run ethernet if I was willing to cut handholes in the drywall and patch them back up....but I'm not.
