I had a similar experience with their double jacketed shielded cable, it’s like
they took indoor shielded and overjacketed it and called it outdoor. I’ve had
no problem with their unshielded cable though. If Shireen made an unshielded
dry tape version I would probably use it. I think they have gel filled, or
shielded with dry tape, but not unshielded with dry tape.

We also tried the latest Apex9 unshielded awhile back, it was OK, installers
said the extra force required with the reel-in-a-box was a bit of a nuisance
although the cable did come out less kinky. We use the DC-1042 now at towers,
for that I like the Shireen reel-boxes a lot.

Subject: Re: [AFMUG] Shielded connector preferences

We bought a few reels of Primus double-jacketed shielded cat5e to replace some
old unshielded crap on a couple towers. It all started leaking within a year.
That was 4 or 5 years ago. Maybe they fixed it. I don't know. But never again.
We do only Shireen DC-1042 on towers now.

What's wrong with their cable? What do you use?

    We use Primus plugs.

The wire channels are larger than the UBNT plugs. Plus the pins don't fall
out or slant when crimped.

I hate Primus cable, but their RJ45s are pretty good. Wouldn't surprise me
if they don't even make them.

RF Armor preferred. Ubnt is OK. ARC is good, too.

Never seen this myself but maybe it's the salt?

Can't say that I've seen that happen, but I don't know that I'd blame
the connector.

As far as I can tell the UBNT, RF Armor and Arc connectors are all
pretty much exactly the same - we've been using RF Armor, for no particular
reason other than that they're the cheapest of the three.

What is everyone's preferences for shielded connectors at the moment?
We discovered at least one corroded/rusted connector last week at a site which
had taken a direct or nearly direct lightning strike which melted pig tails as
well as destroyed an omni among other things. It was a site we bought so we
don't know the manufacturer of the connector or if it's something we installed
and it's the first one I've seen on our network. Has anyone else seen this
happen? Lately we've been using RF Armor have used Ubiquiti shielded
connectors in the past.
