I have a cnPilot I put back into box when it immediately asked for firmware upgrade.. WTF.. It was on for five minutes and I said f this... I installed an air router I had in truck . Done.. Easy Peasy.. I don't want Ciscoesque features... Don't need all that overhead and mumbo jumbo...

I've used r200 r201 and the e400 and have never had any of them lock up, they're just OpenWRT after all. Make sure the cnPilot stuff is using the latest firmware.
