In case some of you are unaware of the leading theory how Trump could have claimed a $900 million tax loss in one year, here’s an explanation (more complex than most people will follow, but lots of people here are familiar with S Corporations):

Just a theory, can’t prove without the tax returns. People here are also familiar with how you can personally make money running a money-losing company. Pay yourself and family salaries, pay yourself management fees, buy goods and services from your other companies, etc. If you get a government grant, find every way to pay you and your friends for the duration of the grant. If you are running a company like Open Range into the ground, make sure you draw a nice salary and drive a nice car for the duration, then move on when it crashes and burns and the investors and creditors end up holding the empty bag in Chapter 11. Of course Trump takes it to the next level, stiffing vendors/contractors/employees and bullying them into walking away by threatening to bury them in lawsuits.
