Good argument, but my observation is that the republicans are doing it to themselves. They are deeply split on ideological lines, and until (or if) they decide to split along those lines, and make a viable third party, the twain shall never meet.

The real issue is that our 2-party system has made it impossible to form a coalition, or even begin to create an argument that is "somewhere in the middle".

California started something a couple years ago called the "top two", but I think it would have been better by making a "top three" primary system. This would force politicians to realize that the vast majority of the electorate is not extreme right or extreme left; that there is actually a path that might work for a majority somewhere.

No, not everyone will be happy with such a system. However, we might get off the gridlock bandwagon, and perhaps we might get out of gotcha politics.

I'm not sure how such a system might come about, but I think we all ought to start working toward a viable 3-party (or more?) system.

Coming from NV, I am reminded of how Harry Reid kept getting re-elected. He made damn sure that his machine kept the Republican machine from getting a decent opponent. There were many means to this end and none of them were up front. But the people in NV got to see some real characters on the Rep ticket against Reid. This seems to be the method this presidential election.

This year with Reid gone we are seeing a knock down drag out fight to the death between the two sides with about as dirty an election as you might imagine... Both decent candidates but absolutely dirty ads striving to paint the other as a horrible person.. What we would probably be seeing with 2 good presidential candidates. Politics in the US should now be flushed down the toilet. We really need term limits so the stakes are not so high at the national level. Without term limits national office ( congress ) is the holy grail. The presidential election is all about influence for congressional/senatorial elections now. And this time about a bunch of supreme court seats (2-3 over the next four years)

Most of his "proposals" are "secret" and/or flowered with bravado.
Pretty much nothing of substance.

We've only seen the tip of the iceberg with respect to this carnival barker.

If the people working for Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, John Kasich, et all had
been doing their jobs a year ago, we wouldn't be in this embarrassing
situation.

The republicans are reaping what they have sewn.

Yep, pretty obvious.

Which part ? how he took advantage of it ? or what is proposing to
change ?

All independent fact checkers are saying that his tax plan is self
serving and will only benefit rich folks such as himself.

Again which part ? the part where he runs the business into the ground
and comes out ahead for himself at the expense of all the little guys ?
Or the part where they starts to get arrogant like Kim Jong-un ?

Decorum, decency, character.... Where did they go? I agree, we
are in bad place with the choices we have... But spooky part
is how we got here.... You Republican guys had an army of
candidates... All better choices than Fuckwad Trump, even
Prick Perry or Cruz, yuk.... But no... And the loyalty no
matter what he does reminds me of Hitler and his followers...
On other side.. Sanders was better choice but Hillary had more
going for her... Can't say I happy about it, but she is
smarter than Trump. Johnson needs a class on current
events. I pray for our country... Lincoln ,Reagan and
Kennedy are spinning away... Like I said before.. New source
        of clean energy
..and on side note... I wish the aliens that followed
Columbus's fleet had sunk them... Oh well.

        off the Civil war.

Of the presidents I have been aware of during my short life,
in my opinion only the following would have had the
temperament to have penned the quote:

        Kennedy

        Regan

        Perhaps Bill Clinton

        Maybe Obama but probably not.

        And then this:

        Executive Mansion,

        Washington, Nov. 21, 1864.

        Dear Madam,

I have been shown in the files of the War Department a
statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you
are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the
        field of battle.

I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which
should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so
overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering to you the
consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic
        they died to save.

I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of
your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of
the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to
have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of Freedom.

        Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,

        A. Lincoln.

        Mrs. Bixby.

Neither of our candidates could do this. They could get an
aide to perhaps pen something similar, but if you consider
their heart, neither possess this type of heartfelt caring or
        duty to serve.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a president that truly has these
        kinds of thoughts and feelings?

Someone that could be a role model for kids.

I wonder if it will ever happen again.
