I would use “Mule Tape” with the tracer wire in it. That way when you go to pull in the cable, the pulling tape is already there. But yes, any conductive element will work. If you use wire, us one thick enough that it will not break when you go to pull it out. I have seen guys put in 22 gauge and then have it snap on them when they go to put in their cable.
