Well...I'm using 15K SAS in RAID10. Only 600GB because enterprise drives are $$.

Out of curiosity what is it that I would need good luck for? Reliability problems?

To add to this, if you are using raid5/6 with modern consumer multiple TB disks... Well... Good luck to you.

ZFS and some of the other more recent additions do offer some tasty features, along with HBA’s, but there’s much wider support, deeper toolset and more documentation for the average person to get RAID 6 working than some of the new cluster stuff.

Yes, it’s cool, yes, it works and scales, etc., but for the average person on vanilla inexpensive common hardware, RAID has been stable and usable for a very long time and would basically work on any hardware with vanilla OS support, and you get pretty reasonable performance. Also, it’d be easier to get help if bad things happened.

There may also be an issue with a power/data cable, but the aging firmware/hardware issue will still be an issue at some point in the future when the gear is harder to get.
