Film:  The Price of Forgiveness (Mansour Sora Wade, Senegal, 2001, 90min

The film takes place in a Senegalese fishing village that exists in a state
of pre-colonial timelessness. The village is plagued by a mysterious fog that
threatens its livelihood. Mbanick, the son of a dying marabout, dispels the
fog, whereupon he wins the love of the beautiful Maxoye. His envious rival,Yatma,
kills him, and the rest of the film deals with the paradoxical punishment
Yatma must suffer. The strength of The Price of Forgiveness lies in its
mise-en-scène, above all its use of vibrant color and its evocation of landscape.
Ravishing cinematography and an exquisite musical score have made this well-crafted
film an audience favorite at festivals world-wide. Based on a novel whose
origins lie in an ancient Senegalese legend, this engaging debut also features
music by the acclaimed performer Youssou N'Dour.

In Africa, mobile films units brought cinema to the people, often times to
places where there were no theaters or even electricity.  This summer, African
Film Festival, ImageNation Film Festival and the Historic Harlem Parks
Coalition brings the popular tradition of cinema under the stars to the four historic
Harlem parks.

Shown in Marcus Garvey, Jackie Robinson, Morningside and St. Nicholas parks,
the films include: from South Africa, Lee Hirsch's Amandla! A Revolution in
Four- Part Harmony; from Senegal, Mansour Sora Wade's The Price of Forgiveness,
and Ousmane Sembene's Faat Kine; as well as Flicks, Beats & Life, a collection
of serious and edgy short films by directors from the African Diaspora.  Each
free screening is preceded by live music!

Through this festival we hope to not only introduce African films and music
to New Yorkers, but also to encourage the public to become aware of and utilize
Harlem's wonderful parks and park programming. Bring friends and your picnic
blankets, music performances begin at 7:30pm, screenings begin at 8:30pm.
Note: Closing Party on July 30 starts at 6:45pm. For complete schedule please
