COMMENTARY
------------------------------------------------------------

After opening as the #1 film last weekend with $46M, BAD BOYS II
will face huge competition this week as at least 6 big budget
films open nationwide today. The response to see Will Smith and
Martin Lawrence together again was overwhelming.  In interviews
with blackfilm.com, Smith, Lawrence, and Gabrielle Union
talk about their involvement in the film.
http://www.blackfilm.com/20030718/features/willsmith.shtml
http://www.blackfilm.com/20030718/features/martinlawrence.shtml
http://www.blackfilm.com/20030718/features/gabrielleunion.shtml

Hoping to knock BAD BOYS II off the top of the box office is
LARA CROFT TOMB RAIDER: THE CRADLE OF LIFE. Angelina Jolie
returns to the sequel as Lara Croft. Also featured in the film
are Djimon Hounson and Gerald Butler. In an interview with
blackfilm.com, Ms. Jolie spoke about making this film while
being a single mom.
http://www.blackfilm.com/20030718/features/angelinajolie.shtml

Tobey Maguire rides the horse of his life as SEABISCUIT comes
to the big screen. Based on the best selling book by Laura
Hillenbrand, the film also features Jeff Bridges and Chris
Cooper. Considered to be a variation of FAME comes CAMP, a
fun loving musical film, which features a powerful ballad by
Tiffany Taylor.  Antonia Banderas and Sylvester Stallone
team in SPY KIDS 3-D: GAME OVER. Returning again are the
kids Daryl Sabara and Alexis Vega. Joaquin Phoenix stars
as a  corrupt Army supply clerk in BUFFALO SOLDIERS, which
also stars Anna Paquin and Ed Harris. Nominated for Best
Foreign Film this past March and coming out in select
theaters is the Spanish-language film MONDAYS IN THE SUN,
which stars Javier Bardem.

Coming soon is S.W.A.T, the theatrical debut film of
actor/director Clark Johnson (Homicide, Boycott). The films
stars Samuel L. Jackson, LL Cool J, and Michelle Rodriguez.
Also coming soon to theaters is CIVIL BRAND, directed by
Neema Barnett and featuring LisaRaye, Monica Calhoun,
and N'Bushe Wright.

If you happen to be in Chicago July 26 or LA on July 30,
go check-out "THE MUSIC OF SPIKE LEE AND TERENCE BLANCHARD".
Mr. Lee and Mr. Blanchard finish their wonderful concert
series which started in New York in April.

Once again, we ask you to support the films, and the people
in front of and behind the scenes.

til next time,

the blackfilm.com crew

A LOVE NOIRE, by Erica Simone Turnipseed
When Noire, a hip, Afro-wearing Ph.D. student, walks into Brown
Betty Books, her righteousness kicks into overdrive amid the
self-identified "talented tenth" who wear their double degrees
and five-hundred-dollar shoes like badges of honor. And then
Innocent walks in, sits down beside her, and turns her on her
head . . .but he's one of them.

Set in present-day New York City with jaunts to Africa, Europe,
and the Caribbean, A LOVE NOIRE is the story of an unlikely couple
that struggles to discover whether their passion will keep them
together, or if their differences will tear them apart. Stripped
to their barest selves, Innocent and Noire transcend all they've
known to learn the redemptive power of love.

A daring exploration of color and class within the black community
through a no-holds-barred portrait of a relationship, A LOVE NOIRE
is a refreshing, richly entertaining look at love today.
