Professional class, you must pre-register and pay by Sept. 10th. If you want to get
the pre-reg. discount of $25 for all other classes, you must pre-register and pay by

(Important: see notes about parking below!)

*Beginner Level I: 6:45 - 8:15 pm; This is a beginning class open to anyone.

rhythms, for people who have 0-2 years experience.
$150 pre-reg (by Sept. 10th); or $175 at first class.

*Intermediate: 8:15 - 9:45 pm; Focus will be on more difficult rhythms, breaks,
and some solo techniques, for drummers who have 3-5 years experience.

foundation of the rhythms. This class is designed for the Beg. II - Adv. levels.

THURSDAYS, Encinitas/North County SD
LOCATION: Well Within Studio, 555 2nd Street in Encinitas.

*Beginner Level II: 6:30 - 8 pm; Sept. 23 - Dec 2 (no class Nov 25); 10-week series
This class is for students who have been studying/playing for 1 - 3 years & can play

the 4-week series (10 hours of intense advanced study with Mamady!) Note: this class
may extend for additional weeks if there is enough interest.

Diego, CA 92138--please be sure and indicate which class(es) you are registering for.
Drum rental: $20.00 for any series and must be reserved in advance.

For more information please call 619/294-9550. Mamady will also be on tour in the U.S.
for the first few weeks of September, and then teaching workshops throughout the U.S.
on weekends during Sept - Dec. For Mamady's tour and workshop schedule, or to purchase
any of Mamady's products (book, cds, instructional videos or DVDs, performance videos)
please visit our website: www.ttmusa.org. For information on Mamady's San Diego
schedule email [EMAIL PROTECTED]

PARKING INFO:
Parking at Eveoke can be challenging as there is literally no free parking anywhere
downtown. Please note: the first two weeks Mamady's downtown classes are on the same
days as Padres games!!! When faced with a choice of cutting our schedule to 8 weeks
with Mamady, or braving the parking situation--we felt that people would want the
extra two weeks. So for classes on Sept. 21, 22, 28, & 29 be sure and leave early and
bring extra money for parking: in the lots it will cost $10 - $15--so carpooling is
recommended. Other options: take the Trolly, or park in Horton Plaza a few blocks
away. Yellow loading zones are free after 6 pm!

On non-game nights there is an underground lot next to Eveoke that only charges $1 per
hour, and lot across the street that costs $4 for the evening.

IMPORTANT RHYTHM CONNECTION INFO
My highest choice is to only send RC to those who want to receive it.
IF YOU WISH TO BE REMOVED FROM THE LIST PLEASE
LET ME KNOW! This is a volunteer effort and all who are on the list have
either attended our sponsored classes, or requested to be on the
list. But if you've changed your mind--no worries!

DEADLINES FOR RC LISTINGS: the 20th of the month prior.
There is so much info these days it takes a while to sort through, organize, and
edit (all listings are edited for size & style--and these are basic calendar listings
with date/time/cost/location/teacher, etc.--due to space and the growing length of the
newsletter I can't include a lot of extra copy and lengthy descriptions for events--
just the facts!). This is a one-person volunteer endeavor--I will do my best to list
any live drumming/rhythm related events, but preference and priority is always given
to West African events and specifically the music of Guinea and the Mandingue. Please
send detailed info in text format only--no attachments. If I have to track down info
then I'm less likely to list the event. I am also unable to send out special
announcements for specific events in between issues. If you want something listed then
it must be in by the deadline!

Happy drumming & dancing!

Subject: Upcoming Events at Bang a Drum

Hi Everyone,

September is jam packed with great events and classes at Bang a
Drum. I have also listed a couple of cultural/rhythmic events in the
community that are not to be missed! Come join in the fun:

DRUM WORKOUT - NEXT LEVEL DRUMMING
with drumming coach, Kalani
Thursdays 7:30pm-9:00pm (Sept 2 - 30)
Series of 5 classes - $100

This class is deigned to take you to your next level as a drummer.
Are you totally happy with how you are playing right now? Are you
completely happy with the sound you are making on the instrument?
Are you playing as fast as you want and the kinds of rhythms you
would like to play? Are you happy with your speed, your ability to
stay relaxed, and your soloing? Do you find that you are playing
the same rhythms over and over again? If your answer is no to any
or all these questions, then this class is for you.

Think of this as a series of conditioning workouts for drummers.
Your coach for 5 sessions is professional percussionist and
educator, Kalani. Kalani will be coaching you in several areas:
Physical Flow - learning the best posture, hand, arm, and whole body
positioning and alignment for playing; Physical Abilities - How to
achieve maximum impact, power, tonal accuracy and speed while
remaining relaxed - so you can play longer and stronger; Musical
Abilities - exercises and concepts for relating to different
rhythms, the math of rhythm, phrasing, subdivisions and
polyrhythms. Class size is limited so that each student will
receive individual attention.

Kalani is an outstanding teacher. He is author of many
instructional drumming books and videos. His chops and form as a
player are excellent. You could not ask for a better coach. This
class applies to all levels of players. It does not matter where
you are in your playing or what drum you play. If you want to
achieve your full potential as a drummer, come join in the workout!
Class will be taught mostly from a conga/djembe center.

Call (323) 936-3274 to register or for more information. Drums
provided.

Using vocal percussion and hand drums we will explore common and

----------------------------------------------------------------
Hollywood Park Casino

I have seen many bad shows at this location, and a few OK ones,
but in general I am always disappointed. Last month Meiway set
a new low for my expectations by delivering the worst event I
have ever seen. It's not his fault, but the fault of the greedy
promoters who charged $30 and didn't make proper arrangements.
Meiway took the stage at 1:30AM -- all by himself. He proceeded
to lip synch to his songs played by DJ Clement. Shameful. As
at every HPC event, there was no real stage and the audience
fought each other to catch a glimpse of him by pushing others
out of the way.

I hereby declare that I will never again list or mention any
show that takes place at the Hollywood Park Casino. Promoters,
beware. Book your events elsewhere.

----------------------------------------------------------------
Temple Bar

On a separate issue, I will no longer be able to provide dates
for events at Temple Bar. They have "upgraded" their website
so that it is now only available in a Flash format. I have no
ability to read any of their website, so I will not be able to
provide any information about them. If you are from Temple Bar,
please do not try to send me email or any other matter on your
shows. If you cannot make a website that is readable by all,
I do not want to hear about your events. It is a shame because
the majority of the African events in Los Angeles now are hosted
at the Temple Bar.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Jerri Jheto

One of LA's own local Nigerian bands comes out from the shadows
this month. Jerri has been here for quite a while, and has had
a couple albums produced while in Los Angeles. He doesn't play
live performances very often, though. In the past, the easiest
way to see him was to look for a bass player in the back of an
AfroBeat or jazz band. This month he has two gigs to showcase
his own brand of Highlife Reggae. It is an upbeat poppish sound
suffused with energy and celebration.

http://www.afropulse.com/music/concerts/2004-09-w2.html
----------------------------------------------------------------
Antibalas

The strong AfroBeat sound of a 14-piece band is something to be
experienced in person rather than absorbed from a CD. Antibalas
is on a tour of America to spread the word of their latest CD,
"Who is this America?". The Conga Room's dance floor gives you
room to work out, but also lets you get arm's length away so you
can feel the rumble of their bass saxophones.

http://www.afropulse.com/music/concerts/2004-09-w5.html
----------------------------------------------------------------
"Nothing But the Truth"

South African Playwright and Actor John Kani stars in his own
production at Mark Taper Forum from Sept 18 to Nov 7. This show
studies the complexities that arise when blacks returning from
abroad to post-apartheid Africa meet up with their countrymen
who stayed home and risked their lives to change the country.
He is a winner of a Tony Award for Best Actor. Discount tickets
are available through Oct 3 with information from our website.

http://www.afropulse.com/music/concerts/2004-09-recur.html
----------------------------------------------------------------
Reader Survey

I try not to be too commercial with the website, mainly focusing
on bringing the concert calendar. To help pay for my internet
connection, I do run ads. I can get higher paying ads if the
readers answer anonymous survey questions to help advertisers
understand the type of audience that visits AfroPulse. I am
asking for just 200 readers to visit our online survey. It will
only take a couple minutes to answer the 12 questions, none of
the information will be traceable back to you individually, and
you may skip any of the questions that you don't want to answer.
This would help me greatly in offsetting some of the costs of
running this website. Some of you have answered the survey
before, but the advertisers like to have information that is
current so feel free to participate once again. Thanks for the
support!

http://www.afropulse.com/survey.html
----------------------------------------------------------------
Things are getting quiet around town after the summer concert
surge. Relax and check out some of the local talent that LA is
blessed to host.
