Subject: September Classes with Mamady Keita in San Diego

*TTM Drum Classes: Mamady Keita Fall Schedule

We are so excited that world-renowned drummer Mamady Keita will be living
and teaching in San Diego this fall. We have created a schedule to maximize
his time here and to try and accommodate all levels of classes. If you have any
question about which level you should take, please call us. Mamady will be teaching
classes Tues &
Weds nights (downtown), & Thurs nights (North County/Encinitas).
Following is registration & class schedule information.

Pre-Registration Deadline: September 10th
If you are planning to attend the Weds. dunun class, or the Thursday
Advanced/Professional class, you must pre-register and pay by Sept. 10th. If you want
to get the pre-reg. discount of $25 for all other classes, you must pre-register and
pay by this date. All classes require payment and commitment to the full 10-week or 4-
week class series'. Mamady's classes are progressive and drop-ins are not allowed.

TUESDAYS, Downtown San Diego: Sept. 21 - Nov. 30 (no class Nov. 23rd)
10-week series, LOCATION: Eveoke Dance Theatre, 644 7th Ave.
(Important: see notes about parking below!)

*Beginner Level I: 6:45 - 8:15 pm; This is a beginning class open to
anyone. Focus will be on technique (learning the 3 sounds: Bass, Tone, Slap) and
simple rhythms, for people who have 0-2 years experience.
$150 pre-reg (by Sept. 10th); or $175 at first class.

*Intermediate: 8:15 - 9:45 pm; Focus will be on more difficult rhythms,
breaks, and some solo techniques, for drummers who have 3-5 years experience.
$150 pre-reg (by Sept. 10th); or $175 at first class.

WEDNESDAYS: Dunun Class: 8:15 - 9:45 pm; Sept. 22, 29 & Oct 6, 13;
4-week series: LOCATION: Eveoke Dance Theatre, 644 7th Ave., downtown.
Learn to play all 3 dununs: Sangban, Kenkeni, Dununba, the bass drums
that are the foundation of the rhythms. This class is designed for the Beg. II - Adv.
levels. Drums are provided and space is limited. ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED:
Deadline Friday, Sept. 10th; Cost: $75 for the series.

THURSDAYS, Encinitas/North County SD
LOCATION: Well Within Studio, 555 2nd Street in Encinitas.

*Beginner Level II: 6:30 - 8 pm; Sept. 23 - Dec 2 (no class Nov 25);
10-week series This class is for students who have been studying/playing for 1 - 3
years & can play the 3 basic sounds (Bass, Tone, Slap). The rhythms will be more
complicated patterns than Beg. I level so this class is really not appropriate for
beginners with less than a year of experience/study of the djembe. Advance
Registration Cost (deadline Friday, Sept. 10th): $150 for the 10-week series; Regular
Cost (paid at first class): $175

*Advanced/Professional: 8 - 10:30 pm; Sept. 23, 30, Oct 7, 14; 4-week
series (no drop-ins) This class is for djembe teachers, professional drummers and
students who have studied with an accredited professor for more than 5 years, who are
proficient in both binary and ternary rhythms, who can play all breaks, who have solid
time and can solo.
ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED: Deadline Friday, Sept. 10th
Cost: Only $100 for the 4-week series (10 hours of intense advanced study
with Mamady!) Note: this class may extend for additional weeks if there is enough
interest.

REGISTRATION INFO
Advance registration checks can be mailed to Tam Tam Mandingue, P. O. Box
83164, San Diego, CA 92138--please be sure and indicate which class(es) you are
registering for. Drum rental: $20.00 for any series and must be reserved in advance.

For more information please call 619/294-9550. Mamady will also be on
tour in the U.S. for the first few weeks of September, and then teaching workshops
throughout the U.S. on weekends during Sept - Dec. For Mamady's tour and workshop
schedule, or to purchase any of Mamady's products (book, cds, instructional videos or
DVDs, performance videos) please visit our website: www.ttmusa.org. For information on
Mamady's San Diego schedule email [EMAIL PROTECTED]

PARKING INFO:
Parking at Eveoke can be challenging as there is literally no free
parking anywhere downtown.
Please note: the first two weeks Mamady's downtown classes are on the
same days as Padres games!!! When faced with a choice of cutting our schedule to 8
weeks with Mamady, or braving the parking situation--we felt that people would want
the extra two weeks. So for classes on Sept. 21, 22, 28, & 29 be sure and leave early
and bring extra money for parking: in the lots it will cost $10 - $15--so carpooling
is recommended. Other options: take the Trolly, or park in
Horton Plaza a few blocks away. Yellow loading zones are free after 6 pm!

On non-game nights there is an underground lot next to Eveoke that only
charges $1 per hour, and a lot across the street that costs $4 for the evening.

*BALE FOLCLORICO DA BAHIA - OCTOBER 1, 2004

African legend. It is based on the most important expression of popular
Bahian culture and folklore, such as Capoeira (a form of martial arts),
*Maculele* (flashing blades and sticks) and Samba de Roda the Capoeira
being the only folkloric manifestation in the performance that remains
in existence today.

MORENO VELOSO* in DOMENICO + 2 - OCTOBER 7*
THE ECHO - ECHO PARK

Consisting of trailblazing musicians *Moreno Veloso (son of Caetano),
Domenico Lancelotti* and Kassin, the collective* Domenico +2* bridges
the traditional and the experimental to create a huge leap forward for
contemporary Brazilian music. Accomplished instrumentalists, gifted
composers and respected producers, the members of Domenico +2 have
collaborated with the best and brightest of Brazil and the U.S.,
including *Bebel* *Gilberto, Marisa Monte, Arto Lindsay and Caetano
Veloso*.

/Sincerely Hot /is the second of a planned trilogy of recordings, the
first of which was Moreno Veloso +2s Typewriter Music. The concept,
in which each bandmember gets to take the lead on a project, allows for
shifting visions in sound. Using a photographic analogy, Domenico
explains: We had the idea to make a trilogy with music. Each member of
the band will stand in the center and make his own album. In this way,
we can change the focus every shot we make. The result is a unique mix
of Brazilian songwriting with quirky beats, loops, and noises of
contemporary electronica that defines the sound of New Brazil.

*The Echo is located at
1822 Sunset Blvd. in Echo Park

Subject: Jamaican hurricane relief info from June Royes - Jamaican Honorary Consul in
LA

I have not been successful in making contact with Jamaica today. The following excerpt
is from a news report on Yahoo News:

KINGSTON, Jamaica - Hurricane Ivan lashed Jamaica with monstrous waves, driving rain
and winds nearing 155 mph Saturday, killing at least two people as it washed away
homes and ripped up roofs and utility poles but unexpectedly spared the island from a
direct hit.

A 10-year-old girl drowned in Old Harbor, just east of Kingston, and a woman was
killed in the capital by a tree that struck here home, said Ronald Jackson of
Jamaica's disaster relief agency.
More news about the hurricane is available on the JIS website: www.jis.gov.jm

Persons wishing to make cash donations to help the people of Jamaica may send a check
to:
The Consulate of Jamaica, New York
      767 Third Avenue, 2nd Floor
      New York, N.Y. 10017-2993

Cash donations may also be sent to the Red Cross. Checks should be written to
"American Red Cross - International Disaster Response Fund". Amounts donated to the
Red Cross are tax deductible in the USA. Donors should note on the check that it is
"To be Applied for Jamaica".

Please continue to pray for our country.

Please send this email to other Jamaicans and friends.

Regards.
June Royes

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 17 7-9 PM

Friday September 17 from 7:00 - 9:00 pm. Sound Healing Practices.

There will be a Slide lecture on the Ancient History of the Frame drum including
information about the chakras from Layne's new book, Chakra Meditation, how it relates
to sound; and, instruction on chanting practices, meditations and pranayama practices
(breathing exercises) accompanied by drumming.

Chanting sacred sounds to the rhythms of the drum is an ancient technique for creating
psychological, physical and spiritual healing. The frame drum was traditionally played
by priestesses while chanting the sacred liturgies of Inanna, Isis, Aphrodite and
other goddesses. It is also featured in the Christian Old Testament as the instrument
of the prophets, including Miriam. We will be chanting the Sanskrit seed syllables
from the yogic tradition from India for harmonizing and balancing the seven chakras to
the rhythms of the frame drum.

There is no drum instruction on Friday evening.

PARKING: Limited parking is available behind the building and also across the street
at Klune Industries.

ZAP MAMA TO RELEASE
ANCESTRY IN PROGRESS
 ON LUAKA BOP/V2 SEPTEMBER 14

GUEST APPEARANCES INCLUDE ERYKAH BADU, TALIB KWELI, COMMON, AND MORE

"Marie Daulne and Zap Mama make music that sounds like a one woman
multicultural movement, melding African percussion, American soul and European
urbanity."-Time Magazine

Evolution and exploration are consistent themes in the decade-long
career of Grammy-nominated Marie Daulne (aka Zap Mama). On her fifth
album, Ancestry In Progress, Zap Mama continues her process of aural
innovation. With the new album, Daulne creates what she calls "an
imaginary journey" that is "organic, but futuristic." Luaka Bop/V2 will
release the album on September 14.

On Ancestry in Progress, Zap Mama places the American beat in a global
context, marrying hip-hop, soul and R&B to the sounds of Africa, Europe
and Asia. Guest appearances by Erykah Badu, Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson
(The Roots), Common, Talib Kweli, and Bahamadia attest to Zap Mama's
widespread influence and reflect the growing legion who recognize
Daulne's unique musical vision. Produced by Anthony Tidd and Richard
Nichols (producer to The Roots, Jill Scott and Erykah Badu), the
majority of Ancestry In Progress was recorded in Philadelphia.

Such evolution mirrors the course of Daulne's own life. Born in Zaire to
a Belgian father and a Zairian mother, Daulne left the country at the
age of three when war broke out, her family taking shelter with a tribe
of Pygmies. They eventually made their way to Brussels where Daulne
spent much of her youth immersed in the sounds of hip-hop and soul.
Appreciation of the traditional African melodies her mother exposed her
to as a child emerged when Daulne returned to Zaire at the age of
eighteen. Shortly after she returned to Brussels, Zap Mama was created.
As the current title Ancestry In Progress suggests, Zap Mama continues
to draw on her musical heritage while embracing the sounds and politics
of today-the result is an album that is equal parts past and future.

HISTORIC CAPOEIRA EVENT TO BRING
TOP MASTERS TO LOS ANGELES

Four Day Conference Will Include Workshops, "Rodas," Music And
Instruction By Top Capoeira Angola Instructors.

OCTOBER 8-11, 2004

LOS ANGELES, September 14, 2004 - The 4th Annual Capoeira de Angola Confere=nce Los
Angeles, to be held October 8 - 11, 2004 was announced recently. Organized by the
Capoeira Angola Center of Los Angeles, with assistance from the City of Inglewood,
this year's event, entitled "Let The Circle Be Unbroken," brings the three top living
Mestres (Masters) of Capoeira Angola to the West Coast for the first time in history:
From New York City, Mestre Joo Grande, the recipient of a NEA National Heritage
Fellowship, 2001; Mestre Joo Pequeno of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, and 2004
Grammy-nominated artist, Mestre Moraes, also of Salvador, Brazil.

The four-day conference is attracting participants both locally and from ar=ound the
world, and will be an intense celebration of Capoeira Angolathe highly sophisticated
African-Brazilian multi-disciplinary artform that combines playful sparring, music,
dance, acrobatics, ritual, strategy and philosophy into a unique game that's both
dangerous and beautiful. Capoeira was a cultural weapon used to break the chains of
slavery in Brazil, where until the early 20th century it was practiced in secret under
penalty of death. It is now practiced around the world.

This event is noteworthy in that it offers the unique opportunity to learn
first-hand from and experience the three top artists in the field. These three Mestres
are the direct link to the ancient African teachings preserved and
passed down through the centuries via oral traditionhence the conference's theme,
"Let the Circle be Unbroken."

The conference will kick off with an opening night celebration, and will fe=ature Baba
Fasina Falade, traditional Ifa priest, author and founder of the Ara Ifa Ijo Orunmila
Temple; Baba Felipe Garcia Villamil, (Matanzas, Cuba) traditional Yoruba & Congolese
Priest & Master Drummer also recipient of a NEA National Heritage Fellowship, 2000;
the Capoeira Mestres and additional honored guests.

The conference will offer workshops, rodas (Capoeira "encounter"), a film =festival,
lectures, discussions, and free community events.n"This is a huge event! It's the
first time in the history of Capoeira Angola that something
like this is happening in California," says Omoade, of the Capoeira Angola Center in
Los Angeles. "We're looking forward to some great rodas with incredible Capoeira games
and music," he said, "because of the caliber of the people attending. We have the top
people in the field, plus their top students people are coming from all over the
world. This conference is energizing the community."

The fees for the Conference are $175 from September 18 to October 7, 2=004, or$200
through October 8, 2004. For more information on this event, Capoeira Angola, and/or
the instructors, as well as a schedule, please feel free to contact Omoade at the
Capoeira Angola Center of Los Angeles: (323) 291-8723 or visit the website at

MAIDEI is a mbira and nogoma fan's delight, featuring
songs which profile the instrument: and no wonder, for
Garikayi is also a woodcarver, carpenter and metal
worker whose mbira creations lend to new musical
concepts. And, he's also a composer!

So if it's traditional mbira and new compositions you
seek, look no further than MAIDEI: it's all right
here, in one package.

Yellow Card by Ndala Kasheba
Limitless Sky Recordswww.limitlesssky.net

From the opening twelve-string guitar and vocals to
the progression of full-chorus embellishments on songs
ranging from a traditional Chiluba celebration song
Kokolay to the poignant Ninlilie Nani, we knew YELLOW
CARD to be a rare 'keeper': a star in a sea of fine
music from Tanzania.

Ndala Kasheba's fame reaches back to the 1970s, when
he led the famous Orchestra Safari Sound.

There's a strong Congolese beat throughout YELLOW
CARD, typical of the region's music - but just as
powerful is the sparkling guitar and Swahili lyrics.

In Tanzania Kasheba is known as the Maestro Supreme
for his fine tenor vocals and twelve-string acoustic
guitar - and it's about time the rest of the world
enjoyed his fabulous, unique sound.

New African Composers V. 1
by Various Artists
Limitless Sky www.limitlesssky.net

There's no singular theme to NEW AFRICAN COMPOSERS
VOLUME ONE: no single beat or focus - thus seasoned
African music listeners well adapted to both
traditional beats and modern influences will discover
here a listening treat.

Take the opening song 'Madoya' by Yekite Beat Band,
for example: powerful drums and vocals weave together
in a very modern Afro-spiced song which includes some
surprising dashes of jazz trumpet.

Ndala Kasheba's 'Umbeya' is a fitting follow-up to
such a powerful introduction, adding The Maestro of
Tanzania's own sparkling guitar style tinged with
background brass and vocals to the syncopated beat set
down by Yekete Beat band.

It's almost as though each band lays the foundation
for the next: no jarring segues here; NEW AFRICAN
COMPOSERS VOLUME ONE is a powerful presentation,
satisfyingly diverse yet seamless in its transitions
between artists and styles.

Subject: REMO Survey - interested in bi-monthly drum circle for ages 55 and over?

Dear Drumming Enthusiast,

Here at the REMO Recreational Music Center we are planning on having a bi-monthly drum
circle for ages 55 and over. We feel this is a great opportunity for people to spend
an evening drumming, creating a nice atmosphere, and meeting new friends.

We would appreciate your feedback.

If you're 55 and over does this appeal to you?
Is Wednesday evening or Friday evening better for you?
Is 7:00PM a good start time? If not, please indicate time.
Any other feedback?

We do realize some people may require assistance and this is perfectly okay with us.
Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback
