System!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Afro Funk gets more great press!
LA WEEKLY : DANCE CLUB PICK OF THE WEEK 11/24/04
Afro Funk - With its amalgamation of traditional African sounds and
newfangled DJ mixes, Afro Funke always brims with hypnotic heat. Jeremy
Sole's Musaics provides a celebratory soundtrack of reworked world
beats, funk, reggae and on the decks, while art installations, drum
jams, dancers and live performances attract a consistently exultant
crowd. Its a free-spirited atmosphere where anything can happen. When
roots man Rocky Dawuni (one of the creative forces behind the club)
recently performed, none other than Mr. Stevie Wonder took the stage for
a soulful jam (his second visit to the Westside spot this year). Dont
know if Stevie will be back anytime soon, but theres always some
special guest popping by to help stir this rhythmic pot, such as ragga
ice cream truckers InI Soundsystem, this week.
Zanzibar, 1301 Fifth St., Santa Monica; Thurs., Dec. 2, 9 p.m.-2 a.m.;
over 21; $5. (310) 451-2221. Lina Lecaro
Contents:
   Miriam Makeba
----------------------------------------------------------------
Miriam Makeba
Formerly a "citizen of the world" after being exiled from South
Africa for 30 years, Miriam is now living in South Africa once
again.  She returns to LA after a long time as part of her
world tours.  She has an 8-member band to help spread the true
message of freedom and celebration that she brings.  She is
definitely Mama Africa and makes all people of Africa feel as
if they are her children.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Temple Bar
This week the Temple has 3 great bands: AfroBeat Down with the
sounds of Nigerian Funk, Hassan Hakmoun with Moroccan trance
music and Leon Mobley and his djembe mastery.  Pitch a tent and
hang out in Santa Monica for a while.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Every year when the cold weather comes the African concerts
disappear.  What warm sandy beaches are they practicing at?
Grab a blanket, hot drink and a music DVD if you feel the urge
to hear some African sounds.
" At the time of the revolt, Doctor Francisco
Gonalvez Martins, (the Chief of Police of the
Province of Bahia), wrote in his report that almost
all the rebels knew how to read and write using
unknown letters. Written letters that "were similar to
Arab." The Alumnus was naturally amazed to see so many
manuscripts written by slaves".  (Excerpt from the
"Casa Grande & Senzala" by Gilberto Freyre regarding
the Mal Movement in Bahia in 1835)
"Playboy Jazz Festival's program immediately dipped into Brazilian sounds with
singer Katia Moraes & Sambaguru. Delivering a program that ranged exuberantly
across Brazils multiplicity of rhythms, Moraes was a bindle of galvanized
energy, her quick-paced singing empowered by Sambagurus driving rhythm section
and the well-crafted arrangements of Bill Brendle." (Don Heckman/LA Times)
Subject: I need Help for Black History Month!!
 Hello,
My name is Jazmin and I'm the Program Assistant for Associated
Students, Inc. in Cal State Dominguez Hills in the city of Carson in
California. I will be planning for the Month of February for Black
History Month. As you might know we work on a budget and provide
events for college students. I was trying to search for an African
Dance Ensemble, or speakers, or preformers for this event.Or any
person that would do it voluntererly is invited. I wanted to know if
any one that knows someone can lead me in the right direction.
Thank You
Jazmin
