Subject: Leimert Park Village to Launch Farmer's Market

*Leimert Park Village to Launch Farmer's Market
*  ** ** By Shirley Hawkins
OW Staff Writer

LEIMERT PARK, Calif. Leimert Park residents will not have to travel far to
purchase fresh fruits and vegetables when the Leimert Park Village Farmers'
Market officially opens on May 22.
The market, which will be open every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., will be
held in the Vision Theatre Parking Lot at 43rd Street and Degnan Boulevard
and feature the produce of 16 farmers selling fresh greens, tomatoes,
oranges, apples, carrots, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and cucumbers. Fruits in
season, such as cherries and apricots, as well as honey, nuts and dried
fruits will also be sold.

Opening-day festivities on May 22 will include a ceremonial ribbon-cutting
and opening remarks from 8th District City Councilmember Bernard Parks,
entertainment from the students of View Park Preparatory School, the Kabasa
Village Drummers, and the African American Five a Day campaign.
According to Pompea Smith, CEO of Sustainable Economic Enterprises of Los
Angeles (SEE-LA), the project is a culmination of community efforts made by
Councilmember Parks' office, the Cultural Affairs Department of L.A.,
Community Build, Sustainable Economic Enterprises of Los Angeles (SEE-LA),
with funding support from the city of Los Angeles Community Development
Department.

Smith said that the market has been in the planning stages for a year and
will provide a vital need for area residents. "The council office as well as
the other organizations involved were interested in bringing a farmer's
market in the area because there was a lack of produce accessible to the
local population," said Smith.

Smith said surveys were conducted last summer with community to gauge
whether a farmer's market would be welcome in the area. "We conducted 300
surveys to receive feedback on the market and asked what kind of produce we
should sell. The feedback was very positive," said Smith. "Residents were
very interested in having a farmer's market in the area."

Smith said that the market will be especially important since statistics
indicate that there is a higher percentage of African Americans with
health-related illnesses, including diabetes and chronic disease. To help
alleviate the numbers, Smith said that the Farmer's Market will also offer
nutritional classes called "Good Cooking," to begin in July.

Smith said that the market hopes to attract nearly 500 to 1,000 people every
Sunday. "The community is excited about the market, and we think it will be
a welcome addition to Leimert Park," said Smith.

SEE-LA is the nonprofit operator of five markets in Los Angeles County
including the 2-year-old Central Avenue Farmer's Market and the 14-year-old
Hollywood Farmer's Market.

I know there is something going on at the World Beat Center that
night, but we will just be getting started at 10 or 11pm. So bring
your earthy drums and good vibes down the cliffs for an evening of
moonlit skies!!

Helio all you beautiful starsuckers 'n gems! Radial Sprite invites
the likes of your guise to beautify the scene down South! Full Moon
freaks come out to please and lift the sleepy dreamers from their
knees! To raise the bar a few tick-ticks. No, no tricks, come one,
come all, to dance naked in the moonlight! Thats right! Below the
Glider Port at Blacks Beach, La Jolla holds the incarnate spirit you
seek! To dance until your body aches, to african rhythms and Tribal
quakes! May 21st is the date, around 9pm, so don't be late! You'll
only dance until the sun comes up, if you bring your drums, your
love, your cup. It will be cleansed and filled and freed! The Bachai
are back to perform good deeds! Dress your best for the art is fine,
costumes and cushions of unique design! Long Live the Dance Eclectic! Body

Rabbi Yisrael ben Eliezer (1698 - 1760), also known as the Baal Shem
Tov, is the founder of the Hassidic (Chassidic) movement, one of the
most important religious traditions in Judaism. A young orphan, he was
cared for by the community. He would wander in the fields and forests
surrounding his home and seclude himself, pouring out his heart to God.
As a young boy he already had an unusually strong emotional devotion to
God. This became the defining characteristic of the religious approach
he would ultimately develop and which came to be known as Hassidut
(Chassidut). He taught that even if one was not blessed with the ability
or opportunity to be a religious scholar, one could still reach great
spiritual heights through music, devotional dance, and mystical story
telling and therefore celebrating faith in joy are important elements in
the Hassidic tradition established by Baal Shem.
