MADE IN TURKEY VOL. 2
- The World Of Turkish Grooves -
Compiled & mixed by Gülbahar Kültür

Mozart had good reasons for being inspired by the richness and diversity of
Turkish music…

Turkey's position at the crossroads of the cultures of Europe, the Middle East,
North Africa, and Asia, no wonder, creates a great musical diversity in this
multiethnic country.
As seen in the first edition of “MADE IN TURKEY”, to show this diversity in
Turkish music in every respect, we do not tend to collect “sound fast food”
– we deliver TurQuality; we are sure this trademark is accepted by more and
more people. In recent years particularly, many interesting and charming
subcultures developed in the Turkish musical landscape. Gülbahar Kültür, the
Radio-Dj living in Germany, was the first one to take the risk and combine
different music styles from her home country in one album. Although this
concept appealed to many music experts before, it was impracticable since this
is an art one can develop over the years with nothing but an internalized
“view from outside”.

The diversified mixture of club sounds, folk music, pop, hard-rock, hip-hop,
chansons, sufi and classical Turkish music in the first edition of double CD
compilation “MADE IN TURKEY” is really appreciated; especially good sales
scored in Turkey is a pleasing surprise. Of course, if a compilation is
successful there comes a second part – “Made in Turkey 2” is hitting the
stores in March 2006. The CDs in this double album “Made in Turkey 2”
contain 39 tracks in total; they are collected from various styles of musical
life in Turkey.

The famous protest singer from the sixties, the unforgettable Fikret Kizilok
(1946– 2001) who became an icon in the anatolic music world, young artists
like Sagopa Kajmer (nowadays a leader of the Turkish hip hop scene), the
multi-culti ensemble Kardes Türküler (the multiethnic group making music of
the Armenian, Kurdish and Azerbaijanian culture) and the Kurdish actress and
singer Rojin underline the musical and cultural diversity of this country in an
eminent way. Also young talents like Burak Aziz, Aylin Aslim, Göksel, Beyza
Durmaz and Zeynep Casalini are wisely chosen for this compilation. And then,
there are these tracks from bands such as Rebel Moves, Lava, Deja-Vu etc.; one
can identify the Turkish musical base by careful listening. It is an obvious
fact that loud and clear, Turkey is a key actor of the global music world.

MADE IN TURKEY VOL. 2
- The World Of Turkish Grooves -
Compiled & mixed by Gülbahar Kültür

ihren ganz eigenen Charme besitzen.

Teil Zwei.
deutlich abgekommen.

Retreat Description

The eminent Nigerian master drummer, Babatunde Olantunji once stated,
Where I come from we say that rhythm is the soul of life, because the whole
universe revolves around rhythm, and when we get out of rhythm, that's when we
get into trouble. For this reason the drum, next to the human voice, is our
most important instrument. It is special.

The drum is the central heartbeat of ritual in Candombl. Its rhythms connect
a collective group of people to the memory of their African homeland, and to
their powerful deities, the orixas.

The Candombl group of religions was birthed in Africa and brought to the new
world by slaves who survived the trans-Atlantic crossing. After reaching
their destined new home, Brazil, and being forced to convert to Catholicism,
they continued to worship their African deities in new, innovative ways.
Candombl is a tradition that transmits knowledge orally and ritually,
through the body and the drum. The ritual is the "place" where embodied
knowledge is passed down, generation after generation. Without a deep
connection to its
past, to memories of its African homeland, Candombl would not have possessed
the tremendous innovative ability to transform its myths and rituals.

Getting Back into Rhythm

Through the dynamic of the drum circle, chant, body movement, meditation and
storytelling, each participant will be given the opportunity to ground their
soul intentions in a supportive environment. The healing wisdom of Candombl
is accessible to all people, of all faiths, through the myths, dances and
rhythms of the orixas. Connecting with our bodies at a deep, soul level will
bring us back to our own, natural rhythms and back into balance with the
cosmos. In this workshop, my intention is to present the orixas as artistic
representations of universal cosmic energies, not as religious manifestations.

Each orixa protects and maintains an aspect of nature and the realm of human
concerns: Oxossi, the hunter, is the protector of all animals and the forest.
He also represents the nurturing of the community; Exu is the trickster god
that mediates the worlds of the orixas
and of the humans, and preserves the balance of nature; Iemanja, goddess of the
ocean and the mother of all beings (including the other orixas), guards the
family and is responsible for the mental health of all humans.

While drumming under a full moon, we will attune to our life's purpose and
bring our dreams into manifestation. At the same time, each of us will gain an
embodied knowledge of African-Brazilian culture and myth, bringing even more
richness to our lives.

Kris Katsuko Seraphine is a percussionist, writer and web developer. At 19
years old, Kris dreamt of a beautiful goddess rising out of the ocean, calling
out to her. At the time, she began studying African Brazilian and Cuban rhythms
on percussion instruments. Many years later, she realized through friends who
were practitioners of Santeria (a religion brought to Cuba by African slaves)
that this goddess was Yemanja, or Iemanja, as she is known in Brazil. Kris has
been passionate about the study of African religions in the new world ever
since.

After one year of intense practice and study on drum set and congas, Kris began
playing professionally at age 20 with bands in Los Angeles, as well as
recording in Chicago, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. She now teaches drum
workshops and facilitates retreats in California and in Brazil.

Kris continues to explore and experience the mystical, transcendent aspects of
Candombl drumming, and is writing her dissertation for her doctoral degree
in Mythological Studies at Pacifica Graduate Institute.

Shaun Oster (orixas: Oxossi & Xango)
Shaun Oster began playing drums at age 12, and has since studied with many
great percussionists such as Mark Craney, Joe LaBarbara, and John Bergamo. He
models his style after them as well as Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Sunship Theus,
Billy Higgins, Mike Clark, Airto, Harvey Mason, Alex Acuna, and Billy Cobham
bringing his style a combination of
bebop, funk, and hiphop. Shaun attended the California Institute of the Arts
and earned his BFA specializing in Jazz Drumset Performance. He has taught
privately for the last 8 years, and has performed with countless bands since
the age of 16.

He also is an accomplished digeridoo player, among other percussion instruments
including tabla. Currently, Shaun is performing with many bands in the Los
Angeles and Santa Barbara areas, as well as composing meditation and movie
trailer music.

About Acacia Mansion
Acacia Mansion is a landmark home in Ojai, California and is referred to as the
"Baird Mansion" by the locals. It was built over a period of 10 years by Mrs.
Baird, a follower of Krishnamurti and the Krotona branch of the Theosophical
movement. In the 1930's the mansion, then named "Acacia Lodge," was a sanctuary
for spiritual meditation practice by Mrs. Baird and her friends from around the
country.

The mansion is currently owned by another creative, spiritual woman, Kristina
Knapic, who purchased it two years ago. Kristina, a real estate entrepreneur,
fell in love with Acacia Mansion upon seeing it and immediately saw its
potential. She has painstakingly restored
and furnished the mansion in the Victorian style to match the construction of
the house.

The Mythic Rhythm retreats for the summer of 2006 will continue to honor the
spiritual heritage of this place, founded over 75 years ago.

Subject: Zimfest is coming!

Greetings to all of you in the ever-growing community of Zimbabwean
music lovers!! Summer is reaching out to us through the
drizzle. Spring rain drumming on the window, budding branches rattling
together, birds singing in the morning as the sun breaks through the
clouds - all whisper to me of the spirit of mbira, the pulse of the
marimba, the heart of our family.

The marimba community in Eugene wishes to open our arms with joy and
invite you all to a very special 15th Zimfest, "Dancing with the
Ancestors - Zimfest 2006"

This year our gathering will be on the Oregon Country Fair site near
Veneta, Oregon, 15 miles west of Eugene. Native Americans have laughed
and danced on this land for centuries. Their spirits look over the
river, the old oaks, and now we will call the spirits of Zimbabwe to
join them as we celebrate the ancient beauty of their song, kept truly
alive in our hearts and hands. Come and be with your family.

There will be a few things different this year.

We're planning for one "Festival Price", opening Thursday night
through Monday noon. We expect the price we settle on will be less
than last year for most of you. It will include camping, water and
showers, all the concerts, breakfast and dinner. Lunch will be
provided by campers (bring your own) and by food booth vendors in the
marketplace, who will also be available for snacks, etc, at other
times. Workshops will be purchased individually, as before. If you
prefer not to camp, motels and RV rental (no hookups available) will
be your own responsibility, with a few options already listed on the
website, www.zimfest.org <http://www.zimfest.org/> .. Please make
these arrangements as soon as you can to be sure to secure a place. We
are also on the lookout for guest housing.

The planning committee, led by Ong Kar Whalen, will publish the
Registration Guide both online and in your mailbox near the end of
April. The Guide will answer all your questions, so please be
patient. Rest assured, though, that we will present a host of great
marketplace items, workshops, teachers and performances both for you
and by you. The festival will be both relaxing and exhilarating - a
gathering to remember.

I see the Fair site as a magical place, with spirits of the native
ancestors hovering, with fairies peeking from under the flowers, with
a great sense of community all around. I envision a huge circle around
a campfire, mbiras and hoshos dancing on the wind as the moon rises,
the wisps of sound leading some to dreamland and others to spiritual
journeys. As we kick up the dust and rouse our energies, we can come
together like never before - no walls to separate us, nothing to tie
us down, only the sky to contain us. This is gonna be so much fun!

See you there.
