7. Congolese Conference.....Thanks!
Posted by: "L Golden" [EMAIL PROTECTED] kongobrazza05
Date: Thu Jun 15, 2006 3:45 pm (PDT)

Greetings,

I would like to personally say, THANK YOU VERY MUCH to all those who
supported the CONGOLESE DANCE AND DRUM CONFERENCE 2006 at the Malonga Center
this past weekend. It was a total success! Everyone’s spirits were lifted,
positive energy was spread throughout the conference, and everyone seemed to
have a good time regardless of the wristbands and the Saturday’s sauna. For
those who attended the Lecture, thank you for getting out of your beds on
Sunday morning to just sit and listen, it was very necessary. I am going to
ask if Professor Nkanga wants to begin an online chat for the purposes of
those that had more questions when the lecture was finished. Also, I will
probably try to put together some of the photos taken during the weekend and
post them in yahoo or my space for all to view but, I will keep you posted.
There will probably be workshops that take place with a couple of the
teachers from the conference a couple of times between now and next year so,
be on look out for that information at well. In the mean time, don’t forget
about the 3rd annual SPIRIT OF THE CONGO Camp in Michigan, June 27 – July 2,
2006. I will upload the brochure for your viewing on the yahoo groups which
have this option, meanwhile if you need more information about this camp,
contact Titos Sompa at (734)761-7071 or by email at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
<mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Tickets from San Francisco to Detroit are
running about $290 on Spirit Airlines right now! Lastly, I have included a
questionnaire d send it back. The tn and he composes music as well as sings
and plays some instruments, I believe keyboard nowfor you to respond and
comment on, in regards to the Congolese Conference. Please take a few
minutes to complete the questionnaire and send it back. Again, THANK YOU,
THANK YOU, THANK YOU.

10. URGENT: OUR FRIEND EZEKIEL MOBLEY
Posted by: "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Thu Jun 15, 2006 3:49 pm (PDT)

Dear Friends,

As some of you may have learned, our dear friend Dr. Ezekiel Mobley passed
away Saturday, June 10th in Pittsburgh, PA. This is a shock to all of us, as
we remember Dr. Mobley as a vibrant, dynamic and energetic man. He had just
undergone surgery for appendicitis and developed pneumonia which became
critical and he did not make it.

You may remember that Dr. Mobley produced a cable television show, "Africa
at the Millennium," which featured news about African history and current
events, the African immigrant community, and collaborations between Africans
and African-Americans.

Let us comfort his dear mother, Mrs. Ora Sweeting, at this most difficult
time. We know her as a leader, an example to us all, a loving and warm
friend. She needs us at this time.

Please join Mrs. Sweeting and the Mobley family at the memorial service for
Dr. Ezekiel Mobley this Tuesday, June 20th at 12 pm at West Angeles Church
of God in Christ.

The address is 3045 Crenshaw Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90016 • (323) 733-8300
(near Jefferson). Do not go to the new cathedral, but to the one story tan
building which is 2 blocks north, and previously served as the main
sanctuary.

I will be joining you -- feel free to call my cell (310) 993-0029 if you get
lost.

Peace,
Muadi

11. Salif Keita is Coming!!! Santa Monica Pier Twilight Dance Series 200
Posted by: "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Thu Jun 15, 2006 3:51 pm (PDT)

There's some great music coming this summer and it's all for FREE at the Santa
Monica Pier Twilight Dance Series 2006, beginning at 7:30pm every Thursday
throughout the summer.

***for African music please note***

** July 27 The Senegalese hip-hop trio DAARA J

** August 10 - African pop and traditional music with Malian SALIF KEITA, and
local fave ASHLEY MAHER & HER BIG GLOBAL BAND

This year the Twilight Dance Series also includes music not only from Africa,
but also Afro-Cuban, Indian, Chilean, Reggae, American Roots, Soul and Gospel.
Come early and bring a chair - and remember to bring a jacket becasue it can
get chilly on the Pier!

Here's the full schedule

June 29 - PONCHO SANCHEZ
Grammy-winning artist Poncho Sanchez is the undisputed champion of conga and a
musician at the forefront of Latin rock. His imaginative rhythms have made him
one of the most influential conga players and percussionists in Afro-Cuban jazz.

July 6 - INDIGO GIRLS, MICHELE MALONE
Masters of harmony and vanguards of the late-'80s folky singer/songwriter
revival, the Indigo Girls had staying power where other artists from the same
era quickly faded.

July 13 - DICK DALE, Killer Surf Guitar
A Pier favorite returns to the Twilight Dance Series stage! Dick Dale invented
the wild, wicked surf guitar music featured in many films including Pulp
Fiction.

July 20 - MAVIS STAPLES, RICK HOLMSTROM, Soul, Gospel and Groove
A 40-year-plus veteran of the music scene - a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and
one of VH1's 100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll - Staples (both with The
Staple Singers and on her own) is responsible for blazing a rhythm & blues
trail while never relinquishing her gospel roots.

July 27 - LYRICS BORN, DAARA J, Club-style Hip-Hop
A double feature of unusual hip-hop with a worldly twist: Born in Tokyo and
raised in the East Bay, Tom Shimura, or "Lyrics Born", makes the kind of
robust, freewheeling hip-hop that followers of Outkast and Jurassic 5 will find
appealing.

The Senegalese trio Daara J plays a new brand of hip-hop, a mixture of French
or American rap, reggae, roots, soul funk and Cuban music. Ancient African
rhythmic poetry tasso influences both the content and style.

August 3 - THE AGGROLITES, JOEY ALTRUDA'S CLASSIC RIDDIMS, CHRIS MURRAY COMBO,
LA REGGAE
The Reggae trifecta: three great LA-area Reggae groups in one great night! The
Aggrolites came together rather by accident when five musicians from two
different groups were backing the great Jamaican ska singer Derrick Morgan on
an album. Reflecting the love for rocksteady, ska and Reggae in Southern
California, this new fusion of two bands hits on something truly authentic,
with classic keyboard riffing and swinging horn-filled rhythms.

August 10 - SALIF KEITA, ASHLEY MAHER & HER BIG GLOBAL BAND, African pop and
traditional music
Known as the "Golden Voice of Mali", multiple Grammy-nominee Salif Keita
successfully fuses traditional African music with contemporary Western styles -
funk, rap and pop. Delighting audiences from New York to Paris since his humble
beginnings in Djoliba, Salif now stands solidly in the center of the Afro-pop
music scene.

Ashley Maher is a true new global diva. Following in the footsteps of pioneers
like Peter Gabriel and Paul Simon, and sounding like Joni Mitchell meets
Youssou NDour, Ashley has recorded four world class albums. Stellar
songwriting, her extraordinary voice, and heavenly world grooves put Ashley in
a class all her own: sublime world/folk/jazz.

August 17 - INTI-ILLIMANI, Chilean Super Group
For four decades, Inti-Illimani's music has intoxicated audiences around the
globe. Wedded in traditional Latin American roots and playing on more than 30
wind, string and percussion instruments, Inti-Illimani's compositions are a
treasure for the human spirit.

August 24 - KIRAN AHLUWALIA, w/ DJ didJital and eccodek and visuals by Amanda
Boggs, The Sound of India, today!
Kiran Ahluwalia is an Indo-Canadian singer who has devoted much of her life to
learning the art of Indian vocal music and in particular gazhal, a poetic song
form that arrived in India since the fourteenth century. Trained in classical
Indian singing, she found herself drawn to the ghazal form and folk songs of
Punjab, her family's home region. The ghazal is a challenging form featuring
both structure and improvisation. Accompanied by tabla, guitar and harmonium,
Kiran adds the drone of the tanpura to her voice to fill out an ensemble
capable of both delicacy and power. She is likely one of the only composers and
performers of gahzal in the Western Hemisphere.

August 31 - DAVID GRISMAN, STEPHANE WREMBEL, Dawg Music and Gypsy Jazz!
For more than 40 years, mandolinist/composer David Grisman has been busy
creating "dawg" music, a blend of many stylistic influences (including swing,
bluegrass, latin, jazz and gypsy) so unique he gave it its own name. Known
widely for his work with Jerry Garcia and many other artists, David has
inspired a whole new genre of acoustic string instrumental music with style and
virtuosity while creating a unique niche for himself in the world of
contemporary music.

French guitarist Stephane Wrembel may not be a gypsy by definition, but his
music has all the nostalgia, joy and jangle of a true gypsy musician; an
impressionist landscape of the Bohemian lifestyle. The rhythmic, jazzy music of
Stephane Wrembel takes us to the gypsy camp to dance around the campfire with
the same sense of freedom, abandon and vitality as the gypsies.

The Twilight Dance Series has been a Southern California tradition for
twenty-two years. After severe storms damaged the Pier in 1983, the newly
formed Santa Monica Pier Restoration Corporation and the Santa Monica Arts
Commission decided to put together a series of concerts to raise awareness
about the restoration project and build community spirit.

Putting together a small amount of seed money to start the event, the City
staged the first concerts under a large blue and white tent dubbed "The
LaMonica" after the ballroom that graced the Pier from the late 1930s to the
early 1960s. Long-time friend of the Pier Katharine King named the concerts the
Twilight Dance Series and the moniker stuck.

The 22nd Annual Santa Monica Pier Twilight Dance Series presented by Amoeba
Records begins on June 29 and will run through August 31, 2006. For ten
Thursday evenings during the summer starting at 7:30 p.m., prepare to sing,
dance, or just rock out to the best in Reggae, folk, rock and eclectic world
music.

Admission is and has always been free!

Directions

Parking on the Pier is limited on Thursday nights, so walk, ride a bike, or
take the Big Blue Bus to the Pier and avoid delays while keeping you and our
planet healthy! If you drive, parking is available in the 2030 Barnard Way lot,
a four to six-minute walk from the concert. To reach the lot from the 10
Freeway, take the 4th/5th Street Exit and stay to the left. Turn left onto 4th
Street. Turn right on Pico and head west past Main Street to the second signal.
Make a diagonal left turn onto Ocean Avenue and watch for the blue parking
signs.
