Famoudou Konate workshops over Memorial Day Weekend in State College,
PA, USA
Hi African drummers,
Spend Memorial Day weekend at the Happy Valley African Drumming and Dance
Conference studying with Famoudou Konate at Penn State in State College, PA
(USA). Famoudou will hold 3 days of intensive djembe and dunun drumming
workshops May 27-29, 2006 in Central Pennsylvania
<http://www.medusadrums.com/famoudoukonate/index.html>. A workshop with
Famoudou Konate is like nothing else out there. Each day involves an intensive
4 hours of instruction in which you will learn everything you
will need to study and perform a complete Malinke rhythm, including all
djembe and dunun parts plus djembe solos and even the songs that
accompany the rhythms in the village. One of only a handful of initiated
Masters of the Malinke drumming tradition, he is a world-renowned virtuoso
and teacher. If you have never attended a workshop with him, this is
not to be missed!
This weekend will also have activities for the entire family. We are
bringing the outstanding performer and teacher of African dance, Cachet
Ivey, from Philadelphia to conduct 2-hour intensive workshops in
African dance on Saturday and Sunday. For the beginner/novice drummer we are
also bringing Menes Yahudah, a Tam Tam Mendingue certified instructor
from Baltimore, to provide some basic instruction prior to Famoudou
Konate's intensive 4-hour workshops. Then to cap off the weekend there will
be an evening show (La Fete) on Sunday night showcasing local African
drumming and dance groups (let me know if you want your group to have a
spot on the program). For the show's finale all workshop attendees will
be invited to come up on stage to drum with the performers.
For accompanying family members not attending the classes, there is
lots to see and do here in "Happy Valley," both indoors and outdoors.
State College is nestled in between Appalacian ridges which provide miles
and miles of hiking and biking trails, several lakes that include
swimming areas, streams full of trout and 2 caverns of limestone formations
open for tours. The flagship campus of Penn State University is located
here, which includes several museums. State College is easily
accessible by car and by air. There are ample motels, from budget to high-end,
campgrounds, bed & breakfasts and restaurants
<http://www.visitpennstate.org/>.
Each 4-hour workshop with Famoudou Konate costs $90. Sign up for all
3 days and each workshop only costs $80. The 2-hour African dance and
novice drumming workshops are $15 each in advance, $18 at the door.
Tickets for the show/Fete are $15 each. Rental djembes will be available
for $10 per day.
Schedule: Saturday and Sunday, 9:30-11:30a.m., Menes Yahudah's
workshop; 12:00-4:30p.m., Famoudou Konate's workshop; 5:00-7:00p.m., Cachet
Ivey's workshop. Monday, 10:00-2:30p.m., Famoudou Konate's workshop. La
